What was your life like before you received the COVID-19 vaccine?

I was a very healthy wife and active mom to two teenage boys. I have a demanding career as a full-time kindergarten teacher, which takes a lot of energy. I was very fit and enjoyed walking 2 miles a day each night after work. We live on a cattle farm and enjoy the outdoors and managing our livestock. I had energy, felt good, was healthy, and was at my best.

Describe the symptoms and the timeline of the reaction.

I received the first Moderna Covid vaccine on 1/15/21 and registered for the V-Safe study. I did not have any reaction to the vaccine, other than a sore arm. Received the second Moderna vaccine on 2/10/21 and again had no reaction to the vaccine, other than a sore arm. On April 1st I woke up with severe pain in my lower back and both hips. I had lost my range of motion and could no longer bend over. There was no incident or injury to cause these symptoms. My hip joints felt like bone rubbing on bone and my lower back was stiff as if I had arthritis (which I never had before) and I was in excruciating pain. I felt like I had aged over night and had arthritis in my joints. When my symptoms didn't improve after several months, I followed up with my primary care physician and she ordered x-rays of my spine and hips. The x-rays did not reveal anything. After one year of pain and no improvement, I went back to my primary care physician in May, 2022 and had an MRI which revealed a diagnosis of spinal stenosis. She referred me to an orthopedic surgeon in June, 2022, who referred me to a chiropractor.

Describe the solutions that helped your symptoms

After one year of symptoms with no relief, I began seeing a chiropractor in June, 2022. Because I was in a critical state, I received treatments twice weekly. After several weeks of therapy, for the first time I began to feel some relief from the pain in both my back and hips. Some of my range of motion came back and I can bend over now. I went for visits twice a week for two months and was improving with each visit, then my insurance stopped paying for the chiropractic services. I appealed and was denied, as they said the visits would not benefit me. Since stopping the chiropractic treatments, I have been slowly regressing. I am in constant pain in my lower back, have less range of motion, and excruciating hip pain when I walk or lie down to sleep. The pain affects my sleep and work, as it is difficult to find a comfortable position.

Which solutions were not helpful?

Physical therapy. The exercises prescribed actually injured my back even worse and caused sciatica in my right leg. I had to use heat, ice, and rest for a week before I could walk again without sciatica pain. I did not return to PT after the first visit.

What would you like others to know?

I was healthy and fit before getting the Covid vaccines and never had arthritis, bone, or joint pain. Not being able to exercise has been life altering for me, as it has always been a stress reducer and something I enjoyed each day after work for my mental and physical health. At the time, I believed my injuries were a direct result of receiving the Covid vaccines, but brushed it off because at the time no one was discussing vaccine injuries. I had no other explanation for the sudden onset of my symptoms within months of receiving these vaccines. V-Safe was following up with me for weeks and even months after the vaccines, but when I reported that I contracted a moderate case of Covid in September of 2021, I stopped hearing from V-Safe all together.
