What was your life like before you received the COVID-19 vaccine?

Very healthy, retired 9 months earlier at age 65 as long haul international major airline Captain. Passed annual FAA exams with normal EKGs for 37 years.

Describe the symptoms and the timeline of the reaction.

I received my first Moderna booster on 10/24/2021. I developed right calf pain shortly after that in early November 2021 that continued through the month. On 12/17/2021, I struggled to climb the flight of stairs to the bedroom for a rare afternoon nap. My wife put a pulse/oxygen meter on my finger as I slept and my pulse was approximately 130 and my oxygen saturation was 89%. A trip to the emergency room revealed a massive DVT in my right thigh and saddle pulmonary embolism.

Describe the solutions that helped your symptoms

Anticoagulation (Heparin) in the ER then Eliquis on release 3 days later. I maintained 5 mg of Eliquis for 6 months then was reduced to 2.5 mg for 6 more months. I’m drug free, healthy again, and feel great.

What would you like others to know?

No more boosters for me. Blood clots can be caused by surgery, cancer, accidents, obesity, or a family history. I had none of these. Blood clots can also be caused by long haul flying which I did for the previous 5 years before this event with no issues. Then almost a year after retiring healthy, I’m convinced as a result of the Covid booster, I developed blood clots for the first time.
