Elaine Goodfriend

What was your life like before you received the COVID-19 vaccine?

I was in very good shape before the vaccine. I was 64 years old with full use of both arms and good range of motion. I lift weights and swim.

Describe the symptoms and the timeline of the reaction.

I felt a burning sensation running down my arm immediately after I had the vaccine. That turned to pain and soreness with limited range of motion. The pain did not go away but I went ahead and had the second vaccine 3 weeks later as all the websites said that pain would go away. The pain did not go away and got worse. I was told I had a frozen shoulder. One doctor said it was because the vaccine was not injected properly but a neurologist said it was an immune reaction to the MRNA. I had limited range of motion and pain almost all the time. I used Lidocaine 5% patches and gabapentin but those didn’t help very much. I did physical therapy because of the frozen shoulder diagnosis but that didn’t help much and I thought it may have made it worse. I had trouble driving the car with my left arm on the steering wheel and couldn’t raise my arm above my head.

Describe the solutions that helped your symptoms

I had an ultrasound guided cortisone shot and within a few days my arm was much better. Within a few weeks I was much better and now I would say that my arm is 95% fixed. The 5% is because it is still a bit crooked when I raise it over my head but I have no pain.

Which solutions were not helpful?

Physical therapy didn’t help. The lidocaine patches and gabapentin probably helped me sleep better but didn’t help much with pain.

What would you like others to know?

I would like others to know not to be ashamed that they had a vaccine injury. It was hard to tell people but so many people replied that they were injured or they know someone who was. I did not get a booster. I went on a vacation and was in a jacuzzi with an older gentleman and I wanted to be up front about the fact that I wasn’t boostered so I told him about my injury and that I wasn’t boostered. He replied that his best friend died 3 weeks after getting the Moderna shot from massive blood clots and he didn’t have the first vaccines. So it’s good to tell people. And there is hope. My arm is all better basically because I found a great doctor (sports-medicine shoulder-spine doctor, not the obnoxious ass at the Orthopedic hospital.
